Florence Joan (Hafliger) Stoppel, 92, began her final journey on Thursday, January 6, 2022 at Satanta District Hospital. She was born July 11, 1929 to Fredrich and Stella Mae (Lessor) Hafliger in Wakeeney, Kansas.\n\nJoan attended a country elementary school, then Trego Community High School, graduating in 1946. From there, she attended Fort Hays State College for the summer to obtain a teaching certificate. She taught in a country school for one year.\n\nOn December 22, 1946, she married Alvin Stoppel. They moved to the Holcomb area into a sugar beet factory home. Joan and Al relocated to Sublette in February of 1956 to begin their farming career that lasted over 66 years. They were also co-owners of Stoppel Equipment where she managed the inventory in the parts department. Upon retiring, she learned to quilt, making almost 600 baby comforters to send to the Children's Hospital in Denver.\n\nJoan was a member of the Sublette United Methodist Church. She and Al enjoyed square dancing in their younger days. Besides quilting she was also a member of the local Garden Club having a beautiful iris bed. Joan volunteered to run the Thrift Shop after retiring and played bridge for several years. Also during this time she went to estate auctions purchasing glassware to add to her collection. Having three great-grandsons close by was truly a joy for her; they visited often. She successfully raised six children. Being a caregiver to family and friends brought Joan great comfort.\n\nSurvivors are daughter, Mary Ann Barber and husband James of Sublette, son, Tom Stoppel and wife Sue of Sublette, daughter, Pam Zimmerman and husband Tom of Dorrance, KS, and twins, Patty Noland and husband David of Bartlesville, OK, and Mike Stoppel and friend Stephen Kinal of Round Rock, TX; grandchildren, Cheri Parks and husband Drew of Emporia, KS, Stephanie Scott and husband Jay of Cottonwood Falls, Clint Stoppel and wife Lisa of Hesston, KS, Christopher Stoppel and wife Haley of Sublette, Michael Noland and wife Heather, and Katie Hill and husband Kris all of Owasso, OK; twelve great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, and Virginia Hafliger and Doris Hafliger both of Wakeeney, KS.\n\nShe is preceded in death by her husband Alvin Stoppel; infant twin sons, daughter, Alana; her parents, Fredrich and Stella Hafliger; sisters Clara Stoppel and Fern Clark; brothers, Floyd, William, John and Fredrich Hafliger.\n\nVisitation will be from 1:00 until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 9, at Weeks Family Funeral Home & Crematory with the family receiving friends from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m.\n\nFuneral Service will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 10, at Sublette United Methodist Church with Pastor Terry Mayhew officiating.
