Juanita (Weeks) Hamby passed away in Stillwater, Oklahoma on Feb. 13, 2021, following a short series of illnesses. \n\nKnown as "Sissy" to her family, Juanita was born June 6, 1938, in Haskell County, Kansas on the heels of both the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. She was the youngest -- and last surviving -- of Dea and Vera Weeks' seven children who grew up on their Haskell County wheat farm. \n\nAfter graduating from Sublette High School in 1956, she moved with her sister Vera (Weeks) Knief to Bartlesville, Oklahoma, where she earned a degree from Bartlesville Business College. She later landed a job with Phillips 66 in Washington, D.C., where she met Larry Hamby, a Bartlesville native who was working for the Federal Power Commission. The couple married on April 1, 1960, and had two children: Carl and David. \n\nIn 1978, the family moved to Pawhuska, Oklahoma, where Juanita threw herself into serving others. She helped launch the Pawhuska Literacy Council, and she and Larry were active volunteers with Boy Scouts, Meals on Wheels, food exchange programs, and more. She was a fixture at the Nazarene Church for nearly 30 years until she moved away shortly after Larry died in 2011. In the years that followed, she lived at Saint Simeon's Senior Community in Tulsa and most recently at the Renaissance of Stillwater. \n\nShe is survived by son Carl Hamby and his wife Kathy Legako of Stillwater; son David Hamby and his wife Melissa Hamby of Tulsa; granddaughters Lauren and Rachel Hamby, both of Tulsa; and a host of extended family in western Kansas and eastern Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Larry; and her siblings Gordon Weeks, Eldon Weeks, Damon Weeks, Edwin "Tuffy" Weeks, Vivian Bethel; and Vera Knief. \n\nAt the family's request, no service will be held, but they asked friends and family to post remembrances via the online obituary at the Weeks Family Funeral Home in Sublette.\n\nIn lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations can be made to the First Church of the Nazarene, 407 E. 8th, Pawhuska, OK 74056, or to your community's literacy agency, library, or Meals on Wheels program. \nTo send flowers to the family of Juanita Hamby (Weeks), please visit our Heartfelt Sympathies Store.
