Loyd Baughman, 94 of Longton, died October 31, 2015. He was born July 12, 1921, the first child of Samuel Thomas and Gladys (Loyd) Baughman in rural Howard, Elk County Kansas. He graduated from Elk Falls High School in 1939 and Southwestern College, Winfield in 1943. In July 1942 he joined the Enlisted Reserve Corps and was called up March 1943. Loyd was sent to Europe with the 396th Fighter Squadron, 9th Air Force as a P-47 armorer. He returned to the US in November 1945 with an Honorable Discharge. In January 1946 he began teaching commerce & coaching in Cedar Point KS. After 18 months he went to teach at Woodbine, KS where he met elementary teacher Joan Louise Poister. They married December 27, 1949. In June 1951 Loyd studied at Kansas State Teachers College on the GI Bill. Loyd continued teaching for sixteen years in five different locations. In 1959 his father -- a rancher -- passed away while serving in the Kansas State Legislature for Elk County. Loyd got a teaching job in Longton, near Elk Falls and operated his father's Baughman Angus Ranch. Following teaching Loyd was a postmaster and continued to actively ranch until a few years before his death. Loyd loved being a cattleman, coaching and watching basketball, cutting firewood and using his wood furnace. He studied automobile specifications and owned diesel and hybrid cars. As an offshoot of his armorer job in the service he was fascinated with aircraft, particularly homebuilts and warbirds. He enjoyed the fly-in at Oshkosh and was proud to have two sons and a son-in-law become private pilots, as well as soloing himself. For his 85th birthday his sons arranged a ride in a P-51 Mustang, as there were no longer many flying P-47s. Loyd was a member of Longton United Methodist Church, Experimental Aircraft Assn and its Independence chapter, VFW, American Legion, Elk County Rodeo Assn., and National Assn. of Postmasters of the US. \nHe is preceded in death by his parents, sister Marieta (Baughman) & Thomas Mahon.
