Copeland, Kansas

Lupe (Torres) Lara, 83, passed away on Monday, August 24, 2026, at Good Samaritan Center in Liberal, Kansas. She was born on January 28, 1943, in Sabinal, Texas, the daughter of Juan and Francisca (DeLeon) Torres.

Lupe and her family moved to Kansas in search of better opportunities in agriculture, eventually making their home in Copeland. For many years, she worked in the fields and became well known for organizing and coordinating crews to remove weeds from area crops. Through the years, she developed relationships with local farmers who knew they could call on Lupe when they needed a crew. She took pride in her work and the connections she made throughout the farming community.

Along with her work in agriculture, Lupe devoted much of her life to raising her four children. At home, she enjoyed spending time outdoors tending to her flower garden and growing plants and flowers. She loved her dogs and enjoyed having them by her side. Lupe was also an excellent cook and loved preparing food for her family.

Lupe is survived by her two sons, Pete Torres and wife Rita of Liberal, KS, and Johnny Mendoza of Wichita, KS; five grandchildren, Henry, Alec, Allison, Austin, and Andrew; and five great-grandchildren, Makinzine, Joslyne, Matilda, Isabell, and Beckett.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Juan and Francisca Torres; two children, Ramiro Sandoval and Matilda Artega; and a granddaughter, Adriana Mendoza.

Funeral service will be at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, August 28, 2026, at Sublette Southern Baptist Church with Pastor Branden Clubb officiating. Interment will follow the service at Copeland Cemetery.
