Ruby Maxine (Ellsaesser) Powell, 93, passed away peacefully at Satanta District Hospital on Tuesday, December 8, 2020. She was born on February 2, 1927 to Mable Electa (Birney) and Raymond Wesley Ellsaesser in Garden City, Kansas.\n\nRuby grew up on the family farm a few miles northwest of Sublette. This is where she met Raeburn and they began courting. The two were united in marriage on September 18, 1946 at the Sublette United Methodist Church. As a young farmer's wife she drove trucks for harvest while raising her three children; Brenda, Wesley, and Leslie. After the passing of her father, she supported the farm operation by keeping careful track of the bookwork. Ruby, like many of the farm wives of the day, participated in social day clubs such as Modern Priscilla, or MSM. She spent many hours with friends playing bridge and socializing with dinners and trying latest trends in dessert creation.\n\nRuby was an active member of the Sublette United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She had many wonderful memories of the annual Turkey Dinner where she would help make the dressing or collect the donations.\n\nWhile Ruby's home and roots were in southwest Kansas, she enjoyed traveling. There were many wonderful trips to New York City to watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, Broadway Musicals, and the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall. She and Raeburn traveled to China and where they discovered how different the meals were compared to back home. Whether touring Europe and Australia or gambling at Cripple Creek, she loved exploring new places. Some of her favorite times were spent with family at her vacation home in the Colorado mountains.\n\nShe is survived by her daughter, Brenda Powell, of Sublette, KS; a daughter-in-law, Donna Powell of Sublette, KS; granddaughters, Nikki Russell and husband Courtney of Plano, TX, and Kara Stump and husband Blain of Hugoton, KS; a grandson, Travis Powell of Denver, CO; great-granddaughters, Lakyn Pope, Brecklyn Stump, and Jayla Stump; a great-grandson, Alexander Russell; a step-brother, Jim Fitzgerald and wife Jan, of Costa Rica; a step-sister, Roxy Katz of Wichita, KS; and a niece, Keranne Brown of Linneus, MO.\n\nShe is preceded in death by her husband, Raeburn; two sons, Wesley Powell, and Leslie Powell; and a sister, Leona Ellsaesser; a step brother-in-law, John Katz.\n\nVisitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Friday, December 11, 2020 at Weeks Family Funeral Home & Crematory of Sublette, Kansas.\n\nA private family funeral will be held at the Sublette United Methodist Church with interment at the Haskell County Cemetery.\n\nMask are required during the visitation and service.\n\nMemorial contributions can be made payable to the Pride of Life, Inc., or the Sublette United Methodist Church in care of Weeks Family Funeral Home & Crematory, PO Box 1200, Sublette, KS 67877.
