Vivian Mary (Kells) Hoffman, 91, passed away on Monday, January 16, 2023 at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal, Kansas. She was born on September 10, 1931 to Dorral Vashti (Gilchrist) and Vern Homer Kells in Garden City, Kansas at the home of Ellie Summers. Ellie was a midwife and the mother of Vivian’s aunt Leona Kells. Vivian’s mother wouldn’t go to the hospital because she was afraid they would give her the wrong baby.
Vivian was raised on a farm in northern Haskell County and attended Pleasant Prairie District School from 1st through 8th grade. She graduated from Sublette High School in 1949.
She married Randall Earl “Curley” Hoffman on September 3, 1950 at the Sublette Christian Church, where they were members. Vivian and Curley were married for 65 years and 11 months until Curley’s passing in 2016.
For over twenty years, Vivian worked as the Deputy Haskell County Treasurer. She enjoyed working with the public, beloved by many for her sense of humor and infectious laugh. She retired in November of 1994.
Vivian enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and knitting. She handmade numerous gifts for her children and grandchildren, including blankets and Christmas stockings. She relished spoiling her loved ones by cooking meals, baking cookies, and making Christmas candies. She and Curley loved to get together with friends and play cards. During the summer, she would get a kick out of driving the boat and pulling her sons and friends as they water skied on Cedar Bluff Lake.
During retirement, she took pleasure in spending time with her friends and family on the swing of her screened in porch.
Vivian was a devout Christian and took solace in her daily readings of the Bible. At the end of her life, Vivian was ready to be with Jesus and her husband Curley.
She is survived by her two sons, Randy Hoffman and wife Rhonda (Hammer) of Liberal, KS, and Roderick Hoffman and wife Rebecca (Frye) of Manhattan, KS; grandchildren, Randy Jay, Roger & Shawna, Rob & Shanna, Rick & Cherie, Ryan, Rejeana and Heather; great grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Brekken, Erik, Jasmine, Braycin, Jayson, Branson, Bruston, and Gentry;
She is preceded in death by her husband Curley Hoffman; parents, Vern and Dorral Kells; a great grandson, Vance Justin Hoffman; and a sister, Beulah Lucas.
According to Vivian’s wishes, there will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. A private family graveside service at Haskell County Cemetery will take place at a later date.
