Zona Loraine Harlow, 92, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 6, 2022 at the Long Term Care Unit in Satanta, Kansas.\n\nZona (Sandberg) Harlow began her amazing life on March 30, 1929 in Blackduck, Minnesota born to Violet Viola (Jinks) and John Sandberg. When she was a young girl, her family moved to Cassville, Missouri. Zona was the oldest of six children, played basketball, was an honor choir singer, and valedictorian of her class. \n\nAfter graduating from Butterfield High School, Zona traveled to Buckeye, Colorado to help with the sorghum and wheat harvest. While there, she met a young man walking down the street with a case of beer in one hand, a bottle of whiskey in the other, and a girl draped on his arm. In true Zona fashion, she popped off a smart remark and she and Oliver began their journey together. The couple married on August 18, 1950 and started their life together in Ulysses, Kansas. They were joined by three daughters: Violet, Brenda and Deborah. \n\nIn 1964, Zona began working at the Satanta grade school as a cook. She spent the next 29 years pursuing one of the great passions of her life, feeding the children of the community. Zona loved to crochet, travel, cook, and spend time with her grandkids, great-grandkids, and great-great-grandkids.\n\nShe is survived by her daughters, Violet Elliott of Verona, MO, Brenda Bussell and husband Larry of Borger, TX, and Deb Forward and husband Bob of Satanta, KS; grandchildren, Katherine, John, Amber, Todd, Clint, and Bryce; numerous great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sisters, Joyce Ward of Springfield, MO, Faye Scordato and husband Mike of Consequence, FL, and Fern Pettyjohn of Wichita Falls; and a brother, Paul Sandberg and wife Ethel of Kansas City, MO.\n\nShe is preceded in death by her husband, Oliver Harlow; parents, John & Violet Sandberg; and a brother, Roy Sandberg.\n\nMemorial Service will be 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 11, 2022 at Satanta First Baptist Church with Pastor Rod Klingsick officiating.
